エンデバー、最終ミッション終え帰還
2011年6月1日、最後のミッションを終えたスペースシャトル「エンデバー」が、ケネディ宇宙センターに帰還しました。エンデバーにとっては25回目の飛行だったそうです。スペースシャトル計画は、7月8日に予定されている「アトランティス」の打ち上げをもって終了となります。スペースシャトル初飛行の際、地球帰還が日本時間の朝だったこともあり、テレビのニュースで着陸のライブ中継を見たことを覚えています。
初飛行から30年。後継機のオリオンは、スペースシャトルと違って、どちらかというとアポロ計画の宇宙船のようなデザインです。スペースシャトルの形態が進化したものでないのはちょっと残念ですが、宇宙空間に出ると翼が太陽の輻射熱を受けたり、コスト面からは使い捨てのほうが効率的となるとやむをえないですね。
宇宙船はSFの世界ではおなじみですが、近未来の民間宇宙船を舞台とした小説「軌道離脱」を紹介します。高度310マイル(約500km)の地球低軌道に乗ったところで、事故によりパイロットが死亡。地上との通信も途絶え、空気は5日分、一人残された乗客がどうやって地上に戻るか、という一種の冒険ものです。
