確か以前は、月の内部は冷えて固まっていると予想されていたように思いますが、最近の研究でそうではないということがわかってきたようです。
日本の探査機「かぐや」による精密な測量と理論的な計算による見積との比較によって、月は地球の引力による潮汐で変形を起こしており、この変形を詳しく調べることで月の内部の構造な状態を知ることができるのだそうです。この変形を詳細に調べたところ、これまでに考えられていた月の内部構造では、探査によって得られた月の変形の仕方を説明できないため、どのような内部構造であれば実際の変形を説明できるのか調査したとのこと。観測データは、「かぐや」はもちろんアプロ計画で得られた月震の観測データに基づく解析によると、おおまかには金属でできた核と岩石でできたマントルでできていますが、このマントルの最下部に柔らかい層があると仮定すれば、観測されている月の変形の説明できるとしています。
また、潮汐による変形により発熱していることはこれまでも考えられていましたが、今回の研究によりこの発熱は柔らかい層において生じていることが明らかになったとのことです。この発熱に酔って柔らかい層自体が成り立っているとも考えられ、この熱に酔って核も暖められていると予想されるとのこと。これら研究を元に、更に月の生い立ち等、月と地球の関係に対する理解が深まっていくことでしょう。
