月の砂に含まれる水は、太陽風で作られていた
月面に存在する「水」というと、南極付近のクレーターの内、太陽光が届かない永久影の内部に存在すると考えられている氷が知られていますが、月の砂にも水分が含まれています。
月の表面の砂に含まれる水分は、当初彗星や隕石の衝突によってもたらされたものと考えられていましたが、砂に含まれる水分の85%は、太陽風が月面に降り注ぐ際に太陽風に含まれる陽子と、月の砂に含まれるケイ酸塩中の酸素の衝突による化学変化によって生まれるとの研究成果が発表されました。
アポロが持ち帰った月の石の研究によって月の石には重水素の比率が高い水が含まれているということがわかっており、これは彗星の成分と近いことから水星由来であると考えられていました。今回の研究では、月面で採取された斜長石のリチウム同位体比率から重水素と水素の比率を計算、実際のサンプルに含まれる水と比較したところ、水の15%は恐らく彗星や隕石により外部からもたらされたもので、残りが太陽風による作用で生成されたものであることがわかったとのことです。
今回の研究は太陽風が吹き付ける月の表面にある岩石の場合ですが、太陽光の当たるところは高温になるのですぐに蒸発しそうな印象ですが、影のエリアで生成されたものが残ったということでしょうか。岩石から水を大量に取り出すのは困難と思われますので、将来の月面基地で利用するには難しそうですね。
