太陽活動、17世紀以来の休止期に突入か
米国天文学会の太陽物理学部門の会合で、天文学者が太陽の活動が休止期に入る可能性があると指摘したそうです。
黒点の増減に周期があることは知られていますが、黒点が著しく減少する太陽活動の休止期というものもあるそうで、休止期に入るとすると17世紀以来とのことです。太陽活動は約11年周期で変動しており、22年毎の磁場極性反転の中間期に活動極大期と極小期が現れるそうですが、予想される太陽活動の休止期が、マウンダー極小期と呼ばれる1645年から1715年の約70年におよぶ極小期のような規模になるのかどうかを調査しているとのこと。17世紀の極小期は「小氷期」との呼ばれるそうですが、地球温暖化の時期に極小期とはタイミングが良いというか何というか。
さて、太陽はSFの世界でもおなじみですが、一風変わった太陽が出てくる小説を紹介しましょう。「太陽の中の太陽」という小説で、リングワールド以来の破天荒な世界を舞台にした小説と紹介されていました。この世界は、地球大の球状で空洞の人工世界が舞台となっていて、無重力の空間の中に100を超えるミニ太陽が輝き、雲や水、植林されたアステロイドが漂っているというものです。そこに住む人々は、自分たちの領土に光と熱をもたらす太陽の側に町を築いているのですが、この世界が人工の世界だということが忘れ去られたロストテクノロジーものです。小説後半で、ここが人工世界であること、外部と出入りできる場所があるという話を主人公が知ることになるので、続編があるのではないかと期待しています。
