巨大ブラックホール同士が21年後に衝突？
至近距離でお互いを周回している二つのブラックホールが、将来、しかも21年という極めて近い将来、衝突する可能性があるとのことです。天文学的に21年なんて一瞬先という感じですね。
衝突が予想されている天体はクエーサーとのこと。クエーサーは恒星のようにみえることから以前は準星と呼ばれていましたが、現在では銀河の一種、活動銀河と考えられています。活動銀河とは、通常の銀河が星や星間塵、星間ガスといった構成要素からエネルギーを放出するのに対し、電波、赤外線、X線、ガンマ線等の電磁波のほぼすべての波長が放出されている銀河で、更にそのエネルギーの大半が中心部から放出されているという特徴をもつ銀河を指します。また、クエーサーは大きな赤方偏移を持っており、100億光年を超える遠方に存在しています。この頃は銀河団が形成され始めた時期とのことで、宇宙がまだ小さく銀河間の距離も小さいこともあり、ブラックホール同士の衝突は比較的よく発生していたと考えられるそうです。
今回の発見もそういったよく発生していた衝突となるのかどうか。今回の発表は、明るさの変化の周期から二つのブラックホールがお互いの周りを周回していると考えられ、更に降着円盤がこれらブラックホールを取り巻いていると考えられるとのこと。降着円盤というのは、ブラックホールに落ち込むガスや塵が集まり円盤状に形成されているものを指します。この発表の根拠となっている542日という明るさが変化する周期が正しいなら、2つのブラックホールの距離は非常に近く、21年後に衝突する可能性があるということですが、これに対しそんなにすぐに衝突しないという意見もあるそうです。今後の調査が待たれますが、いずれにしても今回の発表が正しいかどうかはそう遠くない未来にわかることでしょう。仮に正しくない場合は特にニュースになることもないでしょうが、衝突するとわかった場合は大きく取り上げられることを期待しましょう。
