生命の存在する地球は、この宇宙では先駆者ではないかとの研究結果が発表されたとのことです。
ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡と系外惑星探査衛星「ケプラー」等の観測データに基づく理論研究から、生命が存在しうる惑星の9割はまだ誕生していないとの予測が発表されました。宇宙が誕生してから130億年程、地球が誕生したのは46億年前ですから宇宙誕生から84億年程経った頃になりますが、この時期はまだまだ宇宙の年齢からだと若いということでしょうか。
発表によると、100億年前の宇宙では現在よりも速いペースで星が生まれていたそうですが、当時、星が生まれるのに使わえた水素やヘリウムは全体量からするとわずかなため、まだまだ星が生まれる材料は大量に残っており、今後も多数の星が生まれる惑星も誕生すると考えられるそうです。
とはいえ、現在でも地球が属する銀河系だけでも恒星は10億、更に銀河も1000億以上観測されています。既に惑星も膨大な数存在し、その中には地球と同時期に生まれた同タイプの惑星も大量にあるでしょう。それでも、今後の宇宙の歴史の長さからすると、現状ではまだ1割でのみ生命が誕生したということなのでしょうね。
仮に地球がこの宇宙において生命が誕生し文明を築いた先駆的存在だとすると、それはそれで将来が楽しみですね。SFの中では、例えば過去に超文明のようなものがあり、その遺跡やら痕跡が見つかるといったものが良くあります。映画からテレビドラマ化されたスターゲイトは良く知られていますが、小説だとニーヴンの「リングワールド」、ヴィンジの「遠き神々の炎」やブリンの知性化シリーズ、小松左京の虚無回廊などもそうですね。将来、地球人が銀河に進出し、その後に生まれる知性から見て過去の超文明を築いた種族と思われるかも知れないと考えると胸熱です。
