「あかつき」金星軌道投入失敗の原因
2010年12月、金星探査機「あかつき」の金星周回軌道への投入への失敗の原因が報告されたそうです。
報告によると、燃料と酸化剤の反応で塩(硝酸アンモニウム)が生成され、これが逆止弁を閉じた可能性が高いとのこと。燃料と酸化剤は通常の燃焼反応では窒素と水しか生成しませんが、酸化剤と燃料の蒸気が混合すると水ではなく硝酸アンモニウムができることが実験で確認できたそうです。
あかつきは現在太陽を回る軌道を飛行中で、2015年11月に金星に再接近します。この時点で再度金星周回軌道への投入が試みられる予定で、スラスタノズルが破損していると見られる軌道制御エンジンの再使用と、姿勢制御エンジンの使用の２つの可能性を探りテスト噴射が計画されているとのこと。期待しながら2015年11月を待ちましょう。

アーサー・C・クラークの短編集「メデューサとの出会い」に金星を舞台とした作品が収録されています。1961年発表の小説で、金星の極点付近の高度2000メートルの地域を冬に訪れた探検隊の話です。現在判明している金星の姿とは異なりますが、描かれる世界の情景は当時の知識をベースにしており、そこから導かれる光景や物語は色あせることはありません。
