米ルイジアナ大学、NASAとの協力でＤＮＡ分析の無重力実験
国際宇宙ステーション(ISS)のような地球の大気圏外では、太陽からの宇宙線が大気や磁場によって遮られることなく降り注ぎます。高度約400kmの上空を周回するISSでは船壁や遮蔽材によってある程度の放射線は遮られるものの、地上に比べると宇宙放射線による被曝は多くなります。地上での日常生活における被曝線量は年間約2.4ミリシーベルトとされますが、ISS滞在中は1日あたり1ミリシーベルトですので、1日で地上の半年分に近い放射線量ということになります。
そのような環境がDNAにどのような影響を与えているかを、ISSの無重力環境で分析できる技術を目指し、米ルイジアナ大学がNASAの協力で実験を行うそうです。宇宙飛行士の健康を管理する装置の開発に応用されれるもので、航空機を利用した無重力実験で良い結果が出ればISSに運ばれ、実験に使用される予定とのこと。
SFの世界で宇宙が舞台となるものは数多くあります。宇宙線に関するエピソードも時折登場しますが、最近の小説で印象に残っているものというと「地球移動作戦」で、地球に壊滅的な被害をもたらす天体シーヴェルの調査に向かった調査隊の運命でしょうか。惑星規模の破局物はSFの得意技ですが、この小説は2009年に発行されたものだけあっていまどきのネット事情が盛り込まれていて、今の延長の未来が舞台という感じを強く受けます。何というか、SF好きからすると、この小説のような科学に希望を託し、諦めない信念と勇気の物語にはやはり惹かれるところがあります。
