系外惑星グリーゼ581dに「生命存在できる」、仏研究
フランス国立科学研究センター(CNRS)の研究チームが、地球から20光年の距離にある「赤色矮星グリーゼ581(Gliese 581)」を公転する惑星「グリーゼ581d(Gliese 581 d)」が、生命生存の条件を満たしていると発表したそうです。
「赤色矮星グリーゼ581(Gliese 581)」とはどんな惑星かというと、まず大きさが地球の約2倍で7倍の質量を持ち、水が常に凍ってしまうほどには寒くない「ハビタブルゾーン(生命居住可能領域)」の外れを公転しています。2007年の発見当初は、太陽放射は地球の1/3以下、更に自転と公転が同期していて、惑星の一方の面がずっと太陽の方を向き、反対側は夜の状態になっていると考えられていたそうですが、その後の研究でCO2の分厚い層に包まれていることによる温室効果がおかげで熱が逃げにくくなっており、更にグリーゼ581の赤色の光線はグリーゼ581dのCO2層を通過して地表を暖める効果があるとのこと。これにより、グリーゼ581dは海や雲、それに降雨が発生する程度に暖かいということです。
自転と公転が同期しているという点がその後の研究でどうなったのかは報道されていませんでしたが、仮にそのままだとしたらどんな世界になるでしょう。大きさが地球の2倍というのを直径が2倍とすると、表面積は地球の4倍になりますので太陽のほうを向いた側のみが居住可能だとしても地球よりも面積が広いことになります。
夜の面との境目はまさに世界の果て、という感じでしょうね。自転と公転が同期しているとのことですが、仮に周期が多少ずれていて、例えば1000年周期で夜が訪れるとしたら、アシモフの「夜来る」みたいな世界になりますかね。「夜来る」は確か太陽が複数あって、惑星の軌道との関係で夜が訪れるのが1000年に1回でしたが、周期のずれによって1000年毎に夜が来る場合は昼の面を惑星の自転に合わせて移動する、という世界ですかね。1000年毎に夜が明けると、過去の遺跡が現れるといったところでしょうか。
