ISSの微小重力環境で燃焼実験、NASA
NASAが、国際宇宙ステーションでの燃焼実験で直径3ミリのヘプタン燃料のしずくが微小重力状態で燃焼し、すずを産出する様子を捉えた画像を公開したそうです。画像といっても左右対称に合成したもので、ロールシャッハテストみたいな画像ですが。
無重力状態というか微小重力下でローソクを燃やすと、空気の対流が発生しないため空気を送り続けないと火が消えてしまうなど、やはり地上とは大きく異なる環境なのだなあと思うわけです。
無重力の環境はSFでもなじみのあるものですが、無重力という環境が特に印象に残る小説といえば、無重力の環境に適するよう生み出された子供が登場する小説「自由軌道」でしょうか。この小説は大人が読んでも十分楽しめますが、高校生とか10代の半ばあたりに読むとより感動できることでしょう。
