火星に広範囲な水系、川床の跡を発見
火星探査機キュリオシティが水の直接的な証拠を見つけたとの発表がありました。
発表によると、丸い小石や砂利を発見したとのことで、現在は乾燥している火星ですが、過去には数千年から数百万年にわたり水が流れていたと考えられています。今回見つかった小石や砂利は水が流れていたことを示す直接的な発見とのこと。個人的な感想としては、強風で転がったり風で吹き飛ばされる砂塵によっても小石や砂利の表面は削らた可能性もあると思いますが、発表によると風で運ばれるには大きすぎるとのことです。確かに火星には大気があるとはいえ、大気圧は地球の千分の一程度ですからね。いずれにしても小石はキュリオシティ搭載の実験設備で分析されるとのことなので、その結果を待ちたいと思います。
火星表面の衛星写真を見ると、いかにも水が流れたように見える地形が多く見られます。実際に水が流れていたのか、流れていたのならいつ頃までどの程度の期間流れていたのかを知るにはやはり火星表面で活動する探査機による分析が必要です。最新の探査機は写真も鮮明で、砂漠のような光景でも火星の光景だと思うと感動的です。とはいえ、私は火星の青い夕焼けや広がる砂漠の風景よりも、地面の小石の写真の方がより感動的に思えます。どちらも探査機から見える光景ですが、地面の写真の方がいかにも目の前にあるという感じがして好きなのです。
