天の川銀河で“バンパイア”星を発見
他の星のエネルギーを奪って若さを保つという「青色はぐれ星」が、“星の吸血鬼”が天の川銀河の中心領域で初めて見つかったそうです。
"共食い"をする「青色はぐれ星」というのは、他の恒星との衝突後その水素を奪って明るさを保っていると推測されているとのことで、銀河系の別の領域で見つかっているそうです。
銀河系といえど恒星間の距離はかなり離れているので、恒星同士が衝突するとは意外ですね。
恒星ではありませんが、お互いの惑星の周りを回る二重惑星ならSFの世界でもいくつか出てきます。アーシュラ・K・ル・グウィン「所有せざる人々」、ニール・Ｒ・ジョーンズ「双子惑星恐怖の遠心宇宙船」、ロバート・L・フォワード「ロシュワールド」等。ロシュワールドでは、わずか80キロの間隔で互いに回転しあうという二重惑星が舞台です。地球から5.9光年のバーナード星というSFの世界ではすぐ近所の星系にある惑星で、レーザーにより推進する恒星間宇宙船と寿命延長剤によって、40年かけて調査隊が派遣されます。著者が科学者ということもあり、緻密な科学考証の元に描かれているところが魅力の小説です。
