氷と塵が覆う火星の南極

欧州宇宙機関(ESA)の火星探査衛星マーズ・エクスプレスが撮影した火星の南極付近の写真が公開されました。撮影は火星の南極が春にあたる2011年1月。
堆積した氷が点在し、黒っぽい塵のようなものが氷冠を覆っている様子が撮影されています。南極点から約1,000キロの地点の写真で、このあたりの氷の厚さは500メールとのこと。結構厚いように思えますが、南極点では氷の厚さが3.7キロ以上に達するとのこと。

さて、火星はSFの世界でもおなじみで、多数の小説が発表されています。このニュースで紹介されている写真は南極を撮影したものですが、火星の北極を目指す「火星縦断」を紹介します。著者はNASAの火星探査計画にかかわる研究者で、火星を最もよく知る作者によって描かれた火星が舞台です。小説では探査隊が火星の赤道の南に着陸したものの帰還船に事故が発生。隊員一名が命を落とし、燃料も失われてしまいます。以前の探査隊が北極点に残した帰還船をめざし、6,000キロの火星縦断を目指す物語です。
