アルマ望遠鏡、冥王星の精密位置測定でNASAニューホライズンズ探査機をナビゲート
冥王星に向かっているNASAの探査機「ニューホライズンズ」の軌道修正に活かすため、アルマ望遠鏡による冥王星とその衛星カロンの位置が精密に測定されました。
準惑星の冥王星の公転周期は247.74年。1930年に人類が発見してからまだ1/3程しか公転していないこともあり、探査機の観測を確実にするため冥王星の位置と軌道の測定が行われています。それでも、観測の結果と実際の冥王星の位置には数千キロの誤差がでる可能性があるとのことです。位置の特定には、地球からの見かけの位置が殆ど変わらない、100億光年以上離れたクェーサーが利用されます。クェーサーは可視光では非常に暗いものの、電波(ミリ波)を観測できるアルマ望遠鏡であれば精密な観測可能です。観測チームは、冥王星の初観測を2013年11月に実施し、更に2014年4月、7月にそれぞれ観測を行うことで軌道をより精密に測定。ニューホライズンは冥王星の観測の後、エッジワース・カイパーベルトに向かうため、軌道修正に使う燃料の節約に役立つことが期待されます。
冥王星には衛星「カロン」がありますが、カロンといえばその大きなサイズが知られています。冥王星の直径2,306kmに対しカロンはその半分以上の1,205kmもあり、質量の差が小さいことからお互いの軌道の重心が惑星の外にあることから、二重惑星であると解釈もできるとのこと。また、冥王星とカロンは過去に海王星の衛星だったという説がありましたが、今日では海王星を公転していたことはなかったと広く受け入れられているそうです。
冥王星はメタンに覆われているのに対し、赤外線スペクトル観測によるとカロンは氷に覆われているそうです。ニューホライズンが冥王星に接近するのは2015年7月。ニューホライズンのサイトでは、既に今の位置から撮影された冥王星とカロンの写真も公開されています。2015年の接近が楽しみで仕方がないですね。
