NASA探査機の採取サンプルに太陽系外由来とみられる微粒子
1999年2月に打ち上げられたNASAの彗星探査機「スターダスト」は、2004年にウィルド彗星のコマに突入し彗星物質を採取、他にも2000年、2002年に星間塵の採取を行い、2006年1月にサンプル採取器を地球に投下。その試料の中から、太陽系外由来と見られる7個の微粒子、星間塵が見つかったそうです。
とはいえ、まだ分析途中で断定されたというわけではないようです。含まれる硫黄化合物は星間塵にはありえないという意見もあるそうです。見つかった微粒子はそれぞれ異なるサイズや組成で、大きめのものは雪のようにフワフワとしたものが多いとのこと。大き目とはいっても数十µm(マイクロメートル)とのことですが、太陽風があっても太陽系内に入ってこれるものなんですね。星間塵は超新星爆発によって生成されると考えられていますので、その爆発の勢いで加速されているため、太陽風に吹き飛ばされることなく到達するということなのでしょう。スターダストでは塵を捕獲するためにエアロゲルを使いましたが、星間塵と思われる微粒子はこのゲルに飛び込んだ軌跡から、太陽系内のものよりも高速だったことがわかるとのこと。
それにしても、マイクロメートル単位に粒子が恒星間空間から来たものかも知れないと判断できるというのはすごいですね。１機の探査機で7個の候補が見つかるくらいですがから、太陽系内には大量の恒星間物質が飛び回っているのかもしれないですね。
