大規模小惑星が地球近傍を無事通過
2012/6/15、直径約500メートルの小惑星が地球の近くを通り過ぎました。このような地球の近くを通る小惑星は地球近傍小惑星と呼ばれ、地球から約1億9500万キロ以内まで接近する小惑星や彗星が含まれます。地球と太陽の距離は1億5000万キロですから、近いとはいっても結構離れているような印象を受けます。この地球近傍小惑星は約9000個の存在が確認されていて、更に1300個程度は地球に衝突する恐れのある小惑星に分類されているそうです。衝突の恐れというのは、地球から約740キロ以内まで接近する直径150メートル以上のものを指すとのことです。740キロというと、東京から山口県くらいまでの距離で、地球の直径が約1万2700キロですから直径の1/17、かなり近いですね。
この小惑星は6/10から6/11に撮影された画像から発見されたとのことですので、6/15の最接近の直前です。500メートルクラスの小惑星で地球近傍小惑星の約半数はすでに見つけているそうで、今後このような小惑星が最接近の直前に見つかるケースは減る見込みとのことですが、まだ半数もあると考えると今後も直前に見つかることでしょう。
この小惑星の次回接近は2016年、この際も地球からは充分遠いそうですが、これまで見つかってなかったものが地球の近くを通り過ぎるのようになったわけですから、いつかは地球のすぐ近くを通るようになるかも知れませんね。
