1969年7月20日、人類で初めて月面に降り立ったアポロ11号のニール・アームストロング船長が、2012年8月25日亡くなりました。享年82歳。心臓の冠動脈閉塞のため、今月初め冠動脈をバイパスする手術を受けていたそうですが、心臓手術の合併症により亡くなったとのことです。ご冥福をお祈りします。
11号が着陸する前に8号、10号が宇宙飛行士3名を乗せ月周回飛行を成功させていますが、当時の月面着陸を支えた技術は今からみると原始的なコンピュータと手動操縦です。事前に着陸場所は調査されていたとはいえ、実際の着陸地点の決定と操縦はアームストロング船長の操縦にかかっており、実際着陸した際には燃料の残りは25秒分、着陸の予定地点からも大きくずれていたとのこと。遥かな昔に人類が原始的な船で海を渡ったような感じですかね。恐らく、当時の月到達よりも今火星有人飛行を行うほうがまだ安全ではないかと思います。
